HITORY OF SOMCAA, NA
Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Alumni Association, N.A. (SOMCAA,NA), was founded on October 18, 2003 to further the interests of its members and enhance the image of the medical school; We strive to promote the quality of medical education and support the needs of SOMC medical students with appropriate programs and build closer relations between the alumni, the students, the faculty, and the administration of the medical school. SOMCAA, NA has been organizing regular events since its inception stimulating critical thinking regarding the education of our patients, ourselves, and others in order to better serve the mankind and our noble profession. Our Tax-Deductible donations benefit our Alma Mater, Students & Community.
ELECTION OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (EC)

Executive Committee
This committee would run the day to day business of the organization. They are directly elected by the general members for a 2 (two) years term. President and the secretary cannot run for these positions for more than one term; however, they can be re-elected in any of the two positions after an interval of one term (two years). The Vice President of the current committee would be the President elect for the next committee. However, if the vice president is unable to serve as the President of the next committee for any reason, a new President will be elected. This will be a 7 member committee, composed of – (a) President (b) Vice President (c) Secretary (c) Treasurer (d) Member (e) Member (f) Member. The first truly elected committee will start functioning beginning January 1, 2006. The election of this committee will be arranged during the second half of 2005 and every 2 years thereafter. Any member of the committee can sponsor a project or act as a project leader. All members of this committee are also the members of the board of directors.

Advisory Committee
Composed of 8 senior and/or experienced members with recognized wisdom and contribution. These members would be selected by the executive committee for a 2 (two) years term. The immediate past President and the Secretary is automatically selected for the 2 years term. This committee would have an advisory role, would guide the executive committee with suggestions, and would set the philosophy of the organization. Any member of the committee can sponsor a project or act as a project leader. All members of the committee are the members of the board of directors.

Board of Directors
Composed of all the members of the Executive Committee and Advisory Committee. This the ultimate body for approving or disapproving a major action of the Executive Committee, e.g. changes in by-law. This is also the final body for any conflict resolution. A decision taken by a two third majority of the Directors (actual members, not the members present in the meeting) is an absolute mandatory ruling and can not be overturn by a veto by the President.

ELECTION COMMITTEE
A 3-member committee, nominated by Executive committee would conduct the election. Members may be selected from the executive committee or advisory committee or from both. Chairman of the committee would serve as the chief election officer. This committee would be dissolved after the election result is published.

NOMINATION
Any member can nominate another active member for a position. Nominee would have a track record of positive contribution towards the organization. The nominee should be endorsed by the executive committee, however EC cannot deny the endorsement if a nominee has a proven integrity and a positive contribution to the organization (e.g. recognized participation in projects or organizational activities). Executive committee can deny the endorsement if a nominee cannot prove to have a meaningful participation in the SOMC–AA, NA sponsored project or other organizational activities. The nominee has to submit a written acceptance of the nomination.

CONDUCTING THE ELECTION
After the nomination process is over, the election committee would send ballots to each active (all dues are paid) member via mail. Election committee would make every effort to collect maximum number of ballots by sending remainder mail or E mails. The election committee would send a brief biographical and professional sketch and other helpful information to each member along with the ballots. After the final ballot collection, the election committee would deliver the result through the secretary in a written letter to the Executive committee.
